Antioch, CA -- For
the 2005 season, second generation racer Lawrence Edlund
has teamed up with Davey Key and he collected his first
Golden State Challenge Series feature win Saturday night
at Antioch Speedway. Time problems forced the scheduled 30
lapper to be called at 15 laps with the 11 o'clock curfew
and Edlund led all the way from his pole position start.
Edlund's father Everett Edlund turned laps at Antioch 30
years ago when the NASCAR super modifieds used to invade
for special events. The Edlund-Key team is splitting it's
time between the Golden State action and the Rebel 360
racing in Hanford, but have run three of the first four
races on the Golden State schedule. His win paid $3500 and
outside front row starter Kevin Pylant was a $1500 second.
Pylant was an Antioch track regular back in his stock car
days. Third starter Roger Crockett won $1000 for third as
the top five finishers were in the same order that they
started the race. Last week's Petaluma winner Sean Becker
ran fourth and point leader Brent Kaeding was fifth.
Defending series champion Jason Statler came from 12th to
finish sixth in the shortened race.
Thirty three cars timed in
with the first car on the clocks, Jason York, setting
quick time at 11.780. Young Robert
Ballou was second quick at 12.019 and Kaeding
ran a 12.067. Rick Williams ranked fourth at 12.200 and
Becker was fifth quick with a 12.208. Geoff Duppman
surprised in sixth as Crockett, Pylant, Edlund and John
Gray rounded out the quick ten. Oregon's Billy Nutter made
his third appearance in four races and timed in 11th
quick. The invert 6 heat races advanced the top four
finishers into the A Main. Statler won heat 1 from third
as fifth starter Becker ran second ahead of Jim Skinner
and Edlund. Shain Matthews won heat 2 from the pole with
fourth starter Gray second ahead of Sparky Howard and
Ballou. Kaeding put on a show coming from sixth to win
heat 3 ahead of outside front row starter Andy Forsberg
with Kyle Hirst and Crockett also transferring. Jerry
Bonnema won heat 4 from the pole and third starter
Jonathan Allard ran second ahead of Pylant and Stephen
Allard. York failed to transfer out of his heat with a
fifth, but won the B Main from the pole ahead of fourth
starter Nutter with Duppman, Willie Croft, Tommy Fogarty
and Kevin Sharrah also transferring into the A Main. The B
Main ended with a large crash that damaged the fence and
caused part of the time issues.
The A Main had a six car
inversion of the cars that made the heat transfer and that
placed Edlund and Pylant on the front row ahead of
Crockett and Becker. Kaeding and Ballou made up row 3 of
the 22 car grid. The A main had two yellows and a red
before a lap was scored. They then used a single file
restart and ripped off over ten green flag laps. Another
caution slowed the action before curfew mandated the early
lap 15 finish. Edlund led all the way for the rich win
ahead of Pylant, Crockett, Becker and Kaeding. Statler's
move forward netted him sixth ahead of Ballou, York,
Croft, Matthews, Howard and Skinner. Kaeding's point lead
is 10 over Statler, 12 ahead of Crockett and 14 in front
of Forsberg. S Allard ran 17th and fell to 15 points
behind Kaeding. Becker and Hirst are tied for 6th, 20
points out of first.
The busy Golden State
schedule sees them making their first 2005 visits to Kings
Speedway, Santa Maria Speedway, Tulare and Calistoga on
the next four Saturdays. The early season rainout at
Placerville is being made up on Wednesday, May 11th.
