CHICO, CA (6-30-06)
- It's
been a long road the past two years for Grinnell, Iowa
driver Dennis Moore Jr. After suffering a broken arm
last season at Chico the accident sidelined Moore Jr.
for the most of the 2005 season. After a long summer and
winter of rehabilitation, Moore Jr. returned to the
winner's circle Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway.
It had been been seasons since Moore Jr. parked the
famous Morrie Williams #0k in victory lane. “This
feels great,” said Moore Jr. “I just have to thank
my guys and Morrie for still believing in me after all
we've been through as a team.”
The original start saw
pole sitter Shain Matthews spin in front of the field
and bring out the yellow. This moved up Jason Statler to
the pole spot. On the next attempt he took the lead from
Dennis Moore Jr. The other Morrie Williams car of
Jonathan Allard was the driver on the move. He started
in the ninth spot and by lap two he was into fifth.
However, just three laps later Allard almost tipped it
over and lost some spots. On lap nine Sean Becker and
Moore Jr. began a spirited battle for second. Each lap
the drivers were trading spots as it provided some
exciting racing. On lap 13 Becker moved ahead of Moore
Jr. for good. On lap 16 Allard drove by his teammate for
third. On lap 20 the race was halted for the final time.
Statler was still the leader. On the restart Becker
bicycled going into turn one. Allard was hard on the gas
and tried to avoid Becker but the two made contact and
each spun around. Allard was towed off while Becker
restarted dead last. Becker salvaged a decent finish by
moving into the eleventh spot at the checkered.
On the ensuing restart
Moore Jr., now in second, set Statler up for the pass.
He moved underneath Statler and took the lead on lap 21.
Moore Jr. quickly started to stretch his lead. He led
the final four laps to get the win. Statler hung on for
second. With the win, Moore Jr. 'collected $2,000. The
night was sponsored by Care Free Pools of Chico who
added to the winners share. Johnny Gray came home third
and looked as strong as he had all year in the 25-lap
main event. Andy Forsberg was in the top five all night
but never really was one of the top tier cars. It is a
wonder what Shain Matthews night would have been like he
hadn't spun on the opening lap. The Marysville driver
then started 20th and came up to finish fifth.
Officially he lost four spots from his original starting
position, but in reality he passed 15 cars. On a side
note, Korey Lovell finished fifth but was disqualified
for not heading to the scales after the race.
Forsberg got the win
during the 12-lap B main event. He and Stephen Allard
put on a battle for the lead most of the race. Destiney
hays scored a third place spot while Matt Shelton
finished fourth. Chris Webber earned the final transfer
spot in fifth.
Robert
Ballou won the first heat race. An incredibly
young looking 59 year-old won he race two. Grey Eagle's
Jim Richardson led all eight laps. Danny Ochs cruised to
the third heat race win.
Twenty-five drivers
qualified during the night. Andy Forsberg earned his
first fast time award of the year with a 12.121.
However, Jonathan Allard actually timed in with the
fastest lap but was penalized because he qualified out
of position. The team was having magneto troubles.
