CHICO,
CA (7-14-06) - Although
he has scene a great deal of success in the traveling
Golden State Challenge Series, Chico’s Jonathan Allard
had yet to win a championship point race at the track he
calls home in the 2006 Feather Falls Casino championship
series at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico.
Friday night, Allard
finally posted that elusive home track victory and won
an impressive $2,000 during the ninth point race of the
season that was labeled “Jessie Heating and Air
Night.” Jessie Heating and Air of Chico sponsored the
evening of racing and made the victory worth $2,000 for
the winged sprint car main event. Allard shared victory
lane with Darrell Hanestad of Clayton who won in the
Wingless Sprints, Mike Sohnrey of Chico of the Dirt
Modifieds and Jeff Olshowka of Marysville in the Pure
Stocks.
In the winged sprint car
feature, the early led went to 16-year-old Brett Miller
of Chico who muscled ahead from the outside of the front
row to take the lead. As early as the fifth lap Miller
began catching lapped traffic, which is when Allard
began closing in on the leader.
On the 13th lap, Miller
was slowed considerably in the second turn when he
caught a rut and Allard moved in on the low grove to
steal lead at that moment. Once he was in front, Allard
maintained a healthy lead over Miller for the rest of
the race. While Allard earned his first win of the year
Miller posted an impressive second place finish followed
by point leader Andy Forsberg of Auburn, Dennis Moore
Jr. of Grinnell, Iowa and Shain Matthews of Marysville.
In the Joe Hunt Magnetos
Wingless feature Bob Newberry of Antioch drove from the
second place starting position into the lead of the
feature event on the opening lap. On the third circuit,
sixth place started Jeremy Hawes of Marsyville had
driven up from the seventh place starting position and
passed Newberry for the lead on the high side on the
front stretch.
Once he was at the front
of the field, Hawes stretched his lead considerably
until the 10th lap when Hanestad used the high side of
turns one and two to power around both Newberry and
Hawes to take a lead he would never relinquish. After
taking the lead position, Hanestad distanced himself
from the other 19 cars and went on to score his third
win of the year in the Silver Dollar-Placerville
Speedway championship series. He was trailed across the
line by Hawes, B.J Martin, Terry Shank Jr and Newberry.
The dirt modified
division had 11 entrants on Friday night. Ryan McDaniel
of Marysville took the initial lead in the 15-lap
feature and maintained it until the 13th lap when fourth
place starter Mike Sohnrey of Chico moved into the lead
on the front stretch. Once in front, Sohnrey maintained
the lead for the remainder of the final two laps to
score the win. Duane Cleveland of Chico finished second
in the event, McDaniel was third followed by Darin Ruley
and Dustin Massey.
A mere seven cars
competed in the pure stock division this week. Jeff
Olshowka of Marysville made winning look easy as he took
charge of the lead position with the waving of the green
flag. Olshowka maintained his lead for the entire 15-lap
event went on to win his fourth feature event of the
year. He was followed across the line Marysville’s
Jeremy Blackshere, Mike Slightom and Jason Rash of Chico
and Harold Olshowka of Marysville.
