KAEDING SHOWS HOT HAND AT MCCOOL JUNCTION
by Craig Murphy
McCOOL JUNCTION, Neb. – After a crazy Saturday night at Knoxville, things returned to normal for the National Sprint Tour Monday night, Aug. 14 at Junction Motor Speedway.
In other words, Tim Kaeding won with Danny Lasoski and Steve Kinser close behind.
Lasoski started from pole and led early in the 30-lap main. The lead lasted until lap 15, when Kaeding trapped Lasoski in traffic to grab the lead.
“It’s sometimes better to be in second,” Lasoski said. “Tim did a good job there. He got me caught behind traffic. I wasn’t aware it was that good up high.”
Neither was Kaeding.
“I really didn’t think the top was going to be that good,” said Kaeding, who went on to claim his 12th win in the 30th race of the season. “I wanted to get some momentum up. I got lucky, because it stuck up there.”
Kaeding was glad to see Lasoski mired in traffic.
“Traffic can help out big time,” Kaeding said. “We’ve got 12 wins. Unbelievable. I just wish those two guys (Lasoski and Kinser) would have a bad night.”
As it was, both Lasoski and Kinser battled up front yet again. Kinser got by Lasoski for second on lap 20, though Lasoski regained the position for good on lap 28 while Kinser was third. Dean Jacobs posted his first top-five NST finish with a fourth, while Wayne Johnson was fifth.
Rounding out the top-10 were Jason Meyers, Shane Stewart, Kyle Hirst, Jason Solwold and Travis Rilat.
Even with the lead, Kaeding was aware it was anything but safe with Kinser breathing down his neck late.
“You can’t ever count Steve out,” Kaeding said. “That’s why he’s The King.”
Kinser, meanwhile, had his hands full both with his tires and Lasoski.
“I just didn’t make it,” Kinser said. “There’s not much to tell. They laid rubber. I killed my tires and got real loose. Again.”
Lasoski, who maintained the NST points lead, enjoyed the battle with Kinser.
“It was a really good battle,” Lasoski said. “After Tim got by I tried to shorten the track, because it wasn’t doing any good to follow. That let Steve get by. But it was a great race. The guys here did a great job and made a great track.”
For Jacobs, his first top-five was the latest stroke of good news. Car owner Lonny Parsons, hit by a water truck Aug. 5, was released from the hospital last Friday and is back at home near Des Moines, Iowa.
“He was at the shop quite a while today,” said Jacobs, who continues to fill in for the injured Tim Shaffer. “He’s going to his doctor in Des Moines. We got to see him finally, and we got to see that he’s doing well. He’s back to the Lonny I knew.”
On the track, Jacobs was back to the driver fans have come to know over the years.
“We finally had a decent run,” he said. “We made a lot of changes, and went to Pro Shocks. Tim and I are night and day different. It feels real nice. We’ve got a new crew guy, and that’s working out. I thought I was going to get Danny and Steve at the end there.”
Trophy dashes were won by Lasoski and Paul McMahan, with Lasoski choosing to start on the inside pole for the 30-lap main event. McMahan’s night came an end on lap 8 in the main when he tangled with a lapped car and flipped multiple times on the frontstretch. He was uninjured.
Heat races were won by Kerry Madsen, Jonathan Allard and Rilat. Jason Solwold, celebrating his 31st birthday, was the fastest of 26 qualifiers with a time of 14.487 seconds, his series-leading seventh fast time of the year. All 26 cars raced the main event.
For Kaeding, the win was a nice bounce back from a tough night Saturday at the Knoxville Nationals, where he spun on the first lap.
“We’ll take this win and enjoy it, just like we would have with a Knoxville win,” said Kaeding, who proclaimed how much he loved his car upon climbing out in victory lane. “That’s how our year has been. When we’re bad, we’re 10th or worse. When we’re good, we’re top-three and can win on any given night.”
NST teams next compete at Billings Motorsports Park in Billings, Mont. for an Aug. 18-19 doubleheader.
