CHEVY
POWERS “INDIANA SPRINT WEEK’ CONCLUDES AT BOSWELL,
BLOOMINGTON & HAUBSTADT;
DARLAND, WHITT, SHORT, BLAND & RAIN ALL VICTORIOUS
|
JULY 14, 2008 --- Dave
Darland of Lincoln, Ind. finally got the emotional
victory that had eluded him for several years, winning
Sunday night's "Bob Darland Classic" 30-lap
USAC National Sprint feature at the Kokomo Speedway. The
race, named in memory of Dave's late father, was round
four of the 2008 Chevy Powers Indiana Sprint Week
presented by Fatheadz and Darland's victory gave him a
26-point lead in the ISW standings going into this
Thursday night’s race at Kamp Motor Speedway in
Boswell, Ind.
The seven-race series concludes with Friday’s race at
Bloomington Speedway and Saturday night’s finale at
the Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt.
Darland appeared headed for a third-place finish before
late-race drama unfolded at the 1/4-mile dirt oval.
First, leader Jon Stanbrough, who snatched last year's
"Bob Darland Classic" from Dave on the final
lap, got tangled with a lapped car in turn one on the
last lap and flipped! That put Robert Ballou, who had
dogged Stanbrough for many laps, into the lead on the
restart. Darland quickly jumped ahead of Ballou and on
the final lap exiting turn four Ballou's car hit the
outside wall and snagged the catch-fence, flipping
end-over-end, bringing out a red flag after Darland took
the checkered flags. Levi Jones also flipped but was
officially scored fourth behind Cole Whitt and Tracy
Hines. Darren Hagen rounded out the
"top-five." Darland piloted the Rotondo
Weirich/Karavan Trailers Maxim/Gaerte 2B Racing entry.
Brad Sweet, the fastest qualifier, also flipped,
bringing out the red flag on the first lap of the race.
Cole Whitt of Alpine, Calif. won round three of the
Chevy Powers Indiana Sprint Week Friday night at Gas
City I-69 Speedway, leading the final 24 laps in his
Keith Kunz Motorsports Red Bull/Ferguson Bullet/Brannan
Chevy. Whitt was followed at the checkered flag by
teammate Hagen, Sweet, Stanbrough and Shane Cottle.
Brady Short of Bedford, Ind. led all 30 laps to win
Thursday night’s “Robbie Stanley Classic” at the
Lawrenceburg Speedway, round two of the 2008 Chevy
Powers Indiana Sprint Week presented by Fatheadz. Short
grabbed the lead from pole starter Cottle at the drop of
the green flag and led all the way in his Indiana
Stoneworks/Short Trucking Maxim/Fisher to beat Hunter
Scheurenberg, Cottle, Jerry Coons Jr. and Darland to the
checkered flag.
Jeff Bland Jr. of Springville, Ind. led the first seven
and the last six laps to score an upset victory in
Wednesday night’s 30-lap Chevy Powers “Indiana
Sprint Week” opener at the Lawrenceburg Speedway. The
win was his first ever in USAC National Sprint Car
competition. He started on the pole but was running
second to Ballou on lap 25 when Stanbrough blew a tire
on the backstretch. During the yellow Ballou’s car
developed a flat tire and he had to restart at the back
of the field, putting Bland and his Servia Drywall/Servpro
DRC/Chevy into the lead. He was trailed to the checkered
flag by Jones, Damion Gardner, Cottle and Darland.
Rain forced cancellation of last Saturday night’s race
at Gas City.
Jones’ National Sprint Car point lead after the four
completed events last week stands at 37 points over
Whitt.
